Amish Farm–Again!

Amish Farm (#2) 20 x 24, BFK Rives and AS gel

This is what I painted yesterday. It should look familiar! I used the same black and white photo from my first Amish Barn picture (looking east). I tried not to think of the colors I had used before and in this one focused more on blue greens and violets. I also set the sun direction as coming from the left (thank you Catherine!). One of the reasons I did this again is that I have a friend in Australia (currently sweltering) who is interested in purchasing a snowy barn picture.  One participant asked whether this represented any form of abstraction. For me it does because the focus is on shape, some of the shapes have been exaggerated (silos), and there is a minimum of extraneous detail.  It was fun doing this again. I might also think of doing part of it as a separate painting. But I need to get out and get some new barn photos!  Happy Super Bowl watching for those of you who do this sort of thing (we are still debating here!!!)

  1. A great job on the barn painting! Also enjoyed the post with your students and their artworks. I experimented with Canson Mi Tientes paper painting a snow scene today. I’ll pick up the Super Bowl at half-time. Thanks for the postings!

  2. Jean, love the painting and how you can abstract it. I also love the colors used. Thanks for posting. As for the Superbowl, want to check out the ads.

    • Thanks Pam. Had it been New England I’d be more interested. As it was, I decided arbitrarily to route for Seattle. Glad I did. However, I’ll probably skip the rest and watch Downton Abbey. Having read several articles about sex trafficking in conjunction with the Super Bowl, the whole thing really turns me off. Neither John nor I are into sports and I don’t feel that we are missing anything. We tend to prefer reading and Scrabble!

      • Hey Jean, Sounds like you had a good night. I wasn’t aware of sex trafficking and the Superbowl, how sad. I always cheer for the underdogs or those who haven’t won before. I felt badly that it wasn’t a closer game. My husband and 3 sons watch. I liked the Chobani and the Budweiser puppy love ads. Anything sweet with animals always wins in my book.

  3. Thanks for these two posts. Loved seeing your students work, as well as yours, as they did their color studies and then progressed to their final painting.
