The Evolution of a Painting-Part 2

Hard pastel application for Morning on the River

Having enjoyed my work with hard pastels when doing the studies, I decided to begin this painting with them, over the watercolor. This limited the lights that I could use, but provided many vibrant darks. I used a lot of Faber-Castell Polychromos in a variety of warm and cool colors, working back and forther from cool to warm and warm to cool. I did not limit my palette as I often like to do.  In assessing the picture at this stage, I felt that the tree was too flat looking and rather dominating. I worked hard to distinguish the three clumps of marsh on the left, with shape and color.
